Where to Stay in El Salvador

Bitcoin country, volcano hikes, and world-class surf

Legal Bitcoin tender, El Tunco surf breaks, colonial Suchitoto, and Central America's most underrated adventure destination.

Travel Guide

El Salvador made history in 2021 as the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, and that decision put it on the map for a new wave of crypto nomads, entrepreneurs, and adventurers. But El Salvador was already extraordinary before the Bitcoin experiment: the surf at El Tunco and Punta Roca is world-class, the colonial town of Suchitoto on the lake is one of Central America's most beautiful, the volcanoes (Izalco, Santa Ana, Cerro Verde) are hikeable and dramatic, and the pupusa — El Salvador's stuffed corn cake — is one of the great street foods of the Americas. The country is small (the size of Massachusetts) but packs enormous variety across its mountains, lakes, volcanoes, and Pacific coastline.
